What Causes Ingrown Toenails?

Patients who experience ingrown toenails are often familiar with the pain and discomfort they cause. They occur as a result of toenails that grow into the surrounding skin, and this may cause an infection. Some of the symptoms that are associated with this condition can include extreme tenderness around the affected area, and a discharge that may ooze from the nail. This ailment is caused by trimming the toenails improperly, and wearing shoes and socks that are too tight. There are effective treatment methods that can be implemented which include removing a portion of the nail, and draining any infection that is present. It is possible to avoid getting ingrown toenails by wearing shoes that fit properly, and trimming the toenails straight across the toe. If you have developed this condition, please consult with a podiatrist who can offer proper treatment advice.

Ingrown toenails may initially present themselves as a minor discomfort, but they may progress into an infection in the skin without proper treatment. For more information about ingrown toenails, contact one of our podiatrists of New York. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails are caused when the corner or side of a toenail grows into the soft flesh surrounding it. They often result in redness, swelling, pain, and in some cases, infection. This condition typically affects the big toe and may recur if it is not treated properly.

Causes

  • Improper toenail trimming
  • Genetics
  • Improper shoe fitting
  • Injury from pedicures or nail picking
  • Abnormal gait
  • Poor hygiene

You are more likely to develop an ingrown toenail if you are obese, have diabetes, arthritis, or have any fungal infection in your nails. Additionally, people who have foot or toe deformities are at a higher risk of developing an ingrown toenail.

Symptoms

Some symptoms of ingrown toenails are redness, swelling, and pain. In rare cases, there may be a yellowish drainage coming from the nail.

Treatment

Ignoring an ingrown toenail can have serious complications. Infections of the nail border can progress to a deeper soft-tissue infection, which can then turn into a bone infection. You should always speak with your podiatrist if you suspect you have an ingrown toenail, especially if you have diabetes or poor circulation.

Most Babies Are Born with Flat Feet

Babies feet are soft and flexible, and this is a result of bones that have not fully developed. Research has indicated the importance of wearing shoes and socks that fit correctly, and this can help in preventing uncomfortable foot conditions. It is beneficial that children walk barefoot while indoors, and this aids in strengthening the toes which help to provide the grasping motion. It is important to measure children's feet approximately every other month until the age of three. This will ensure the correct size shoes are worn for their rapidly growing feet. Most babies are born with flat feet, and the arch will fully develop by seven years old. If you notice your child is walking with their feet pointed inward or outward, it is advised that you seek the counsel of a podiatrist who can properly examine your child’s feet.

Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact one of our podiatrists of New York. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.

If you experience pain and discomfort on the outside of the foot, you may have what is known as cuboid syndrome. The cuboid bone is a portion of the joint that promotes mobility. This foot condition can develop when the cuboid bone moves from its normal position, and this can cause difficulty in standing or walking. Professional ballet dancers may notice this uncomfortable sensation on the outside of their foot, in addition to people who have inversion ankle sprains. Possible causes for this condition to develop includes jumping onto a hard surface, or from wearing shoes that do not fit properly. The symptoms that are associated with cuboid syndrome often include the inability to walk, moderate swelling on the outside of the foot, and the pain may extend to the sole of the foot. If you feel you have developed cuboid syndrome, it is suggested to consult with a podiatrist who can guide you toward proper treatment techniques.

Cuboid syndrome, also known as cuboid subluxation, occurs when the joints and ligaments near the cuboid bone in the foot become torn. If you have cuboid syndrome, consult with one of our podiatrists  from New York. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Cuboid syndrome is a common cause of lateral foot pain, which is pain on the outside of the foot. The condition may happen suddenly due to an ankle sprain, or it may develop slowly overtime from repetitive tension through the bone and surrounding structures.

Causes

The most common causes of cuboid syndrome include:

  • Injury – The most common cause of this ailment is an ankle sprain.
  • Repetitive Strain – Tension placed through the peroneus longus muscle from repetitive activities such as jumping and running may cause excessive traction on the bone causing it to sublux.
  • Altered Foot Biomechanics – Most people suffering from cuboid subluxation have flat feet.

Symptoms

A common symptom of cuboid syndrome is pain along the outside of the foot which can be felt in the ankle and toes. This pain may create walking difficulties and may cause those with the condition to walk with a limp.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of cuboid syndrome is often difficult, and it is often misdiagnosed. X-rays, MRIs and CT scans often fail to properly show the cuboid subluxation. Although there isn’t a specific test used to diagnose cuboid syndrome, your podiatrist will usually check if pain is felt while pressing firmly on the cuboid bone of your foot.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are ice therapy, rest, exercise, taping, and orthotics.

Shoes are designed for different functions, and it is beneficial to wear the correct shoes for running and walking. Shoes that are ideal for walking will have rounded heels, and provide the proper amount of stability. This can enable the walker to maintain flexibility as each step is taken. If speed walking is favored, it is helpful to wear shoes that have adequate cushioning, which aids in shock absorption. For people who prefer running, the shoe should consist of a thicker sole, and are made with materials that are lightweight. Additionally, running shoes provide complete arch support, and will help to protect the muscles and ligaments of the feet. If you would like additional information about how to choose walking or running shoes, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist.

For more information about walking shoes versus running shoes, consult with one of our podiatrists from New York. Our doctors can measure your feet to determine what your needs are and help you find an appropriate pair of footwear.

Foot Health: The Differences between Walking & Running Shoes

There are great ways to stay in shape: running and walking are two great exercises to a healthy lifestyle. It is important to know that running shoes and walking shoes are not interchangeable. There is a key difference on how the feet hit the ground when someone is running or walking. This is why one should be aware that a shoe is designed differently for each activity.

You may be asking yourself what the real differences are between walking and running shoes and the answers may shock you.

Differences

Walking doesn’t involve as much stress or impact on the feet as running does. However, this doesn’t mean that you should be any less prepared. When you’re walking, you land on your heels and have your foot roll forward. This rolling motion requires additional support to the feet.

Flexibility – Walking shoes are designed to have soft, flexible soles. This allows the walker to push off easily with each step.
