Possible Causes of Blisters

Blisters on the feet can be uncomfortable, painful, and if infected, can become a serious health issue. Blisters are a small pocket of fluid that develops over a damaged portion of skin. This is the body’s natural defense in protecting the area as new skin forms. Blisters can develop from wearing shoes that do not fit correctly, and this can cause the foot to rub against the shoe. Many patients find it helpful to keep their feet as dry as possible, and this can aid in preventing blisters. Additionally, blisters can develop from a severe sun or chemical burn, frostbite, or possibly from an allergic reaction. If you have developed blisters on your feet, it is suggested that you speak to a podiatrist who can guide you toward proper treatment and healing techniques.

Blisters are prone to making everyday activities extremely uncomfortable. If your feet are hurting, contact one of our podiatrists of New York. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Foot Blisters

Foot blisters develop as a result of constantly wearing tight or ill-fitting footwear. This happens due to the constant rubbing from the shoe, which can often lead to pain.

What Are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

How Do Blisters Form?

Blisters on the feet are often the result of constant friction of skin and material, usually by shoe rubbing. Walking in sandals, boots, or shoes that don’t fit properly for long periods of time can result in a blister. Having consistent foot moisture and humidity can easily lead to blister formation.

Prevention & Treatment

It is important to properly care for the affected area in order to prevent infection and ease the pain. Do not lance the blister and use a Band-Aid to provide pain relief. Also, be sure to keep your feet dry and wear proper fitting shoes. If you see blood or pus in a blister, seek assistance from a podiatrist.

Are Orthotics Right for You?

Orthotics are shoe or heel inserts that can be custom made by a podiatrist if you are having foot, leg, or back pain. Orthotics are generally used to help correct foot abnormalities, ease pain in feet and ankles, and reduce the risk of injury. Continued heel and foot pain are customary complaints that are diagnosed and can lead to a trial use of orthotics. A podiatrist will usually examine your feet, ask you to walk and perform movements to look at how your feet and ankles are positioned and how the feet strike the ground, and possibly order further imaging, such as an X-ray or MRI to help them identify problem areas. Arthritis, lack of cushioning, bunions, bursitis, flat feet, and hammertoes are all examples of conditions that orthotics might help. Though you can buy over-the-counter foot pads, do home exercises, and/or try nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) to try and help with pain and associated problems, you might be prescribed orthotics if these do not help. It is suggested that you visit a podiatrist for any issues that cause discomfort that might be related to your feet for proper diagnosis and treatment.

If you are having discomfort in your feet and would like to try orthotics, contact one of our podiatrists from New York. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Are Orthotics?

Orthotics are inserts you can place into your shoes to help with a variety of foot problems such as flat feet or foot pain. Orthotics provide relief and comfort for minor foot and heel pain but can’t correct serious biomechanical problems in your feet.

Over-the-Counter Inserts

Orthotics come in a wide variety of over-the-counter inserts that are used to treat foot pain, heel pain, and minor problems. For example, arch supports can be inserted into your shoes to help correct overarched or flat feet, while gel insoles are often used because they provide comfort and relief from foot and heel pain by alleviating pressure.

Prescription Orthotics

If over-the-counter inserts don’t work for you or if you have a more severe foot concern, it is possible to have your podiatrist prescribe custom orthotics. These high-quality inserts are designed to treat problems such as abnormal motion, plantar fasciitis, and severe forms of heel pain. They can even be used to help patients suffering from diabetes by treating foot ulcers and painful calluses and are usually molded to your feet individually, which allows them to provide full support and comfort.

If you are experiencing minor to severe foot or heel pain, it’s recommended to speak with your podiatrist about the possibilities of using orthotics. A podiatrist can determine which type of orthotic is right for you and allow you to take the first steps towards being pain-free.

How to Measure for Shoe Size

Always measure your feet if you have any questions about your proper shoe size. You can measure your own feet with a tape measure or ruler, paper, a writing implement, and a chair to sit on while measuring your feet. First, tape the paper to the floor so it will not move. Second, sit on the chair and put one foot on the paper. Make sure to wear socks or foot coverings that you plan to wear with shoes before placing them on the paper. Third, outline the outside of your foot with your pen or pencil. Do this for both feet to check subtle differences that might be present between your feet. Fourth, measure from the tip of the heel to the longest toe of your foot and make a note of the numbers. Finally, do some simple math – subtract 3/16 from the measurement you wrote down to account for the difference between your foot and the shoe. The result is your shoe size! If you have trouble measuring your feet properly or find that you are still not able to find comfortably fitting shoes, see a podiatrist for help in measurements, and shoe suggestions, or to help you detect any other problems that might be going on with your feet.

Getting the right shoe size is an important part of proper foot health. Seek the assistance of one of our podiatrists from New York. Our doctors will provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Getting the Right Shoe Size

There are many people who wear shoes that are the incorrect size, negatively affecting their feet and posture. Selecting the right shoes is not a difficult process, so long as you keep several things in mind when it comes to choosing the right pair.

  • When visiting the shoe store, use the tools available to measure your foot.
  • Be sure there is ‘wiggle room’. There should be about an inch between your toes and the tip of your shoes.
  • Do not always assume you are the same size, as manufacturers run differently.
  • Purchase shoes later in the day, as your feet swell as the day progresses.
  • If a shoe is not comfortable, it is not suitable. Most shoes can’t be ‘broken in’, and comfort should be the ultimate goal when it comes to choosing the right pair of shoes

As our feet hold our body weight and keep us moving, it is important to treat them right. Picking the right pair of shoes can provide your feet comfort and mobility without pain.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact one of our offices located in Ozone Park, and Manhasset, NY . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

Women’s Foot Care

April is Foot Health Month! To honor the importance of good foot health and prepare for the warmer months and more attractive sandal-wearing, we can give our feet the proper time and attention they deserve for all they do for us. Because of all we subject our feet to, they are the part of the body that is most apt to sustain injury. Proper foot care is simple if tended to regularly. The things to do to care for your feet are routinely washing them and making sure to dry them completely, moisturizing the feet to prevent dry, cracked skin, avoiding lotion in between the toes, ensuring the proper fitting of shoes, choosing supportive shoes and socks that are not tight or irritating to feet, alternating the shoes you wear daily and changing up heel heights, wearing clean socks each day that socks are worn, and not going barefoot for extended time periods. Women who are pregnant, older, or have health conditions, like diabetes or poor circulation, need to pay additional attention to specific things related to their feet. For example, pregnant and elderly women need to wear shoes that have better shock absorbency, and women with diabetes need to check their feet regularly to make sure nothing unusual is going on that they may not feel. If getting pedicures in a salon is something that you do, make sure the tubs and instruments used are well sanitized. Most of these suggestions (other than pregnancy-related foot care) apply to men and women alike. Consulting with a podiatrist as part of your regular health care is a good practice to make sure these vital parts of the body are well maintained and painful foot problems, even disability, are prevented.

Everyday foot care is very important to prevent infection and other foot ailments. If you need your feet checked, contact one of our podiatrists from New York. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.
